Special Education Certificate of Completion

Quinnipiac designed its Special Education Certificate of Completion to provide general education teachers and pre-service candidates with actionable skills and strategies for differentiation, collaboration and accommodation. The program’s coursework provides students with a deeper understanding of the exceptional child and introduces them to creating and teaching in an inclusive classroom. Students also have the opportunity to explore autism spectrum disorders or specific learning disabilities before completing a final independent study as part of their capstone.

Expected Completion: May 2020

Upon completion of this certificate, I will have had the opportunity to complete further coursework in special education. This coursework includes methods, strategies, and understanding in introduction to the exceptional child, teaching in the inclusive classroom, specific learning disabilities: identification, instruction, and assessment, as well as, independent research in special education.

I had the amazing opportunity to further expand my understanding of individuals with disabilities by exploring specific common learning disabilities. In a culminating research course, I was able to develop a deeper understanding of the obstacles people with special needs face as they strive for more inclusion in society. Based on my findings, I constructed a calendar to provide my students and their families with more information and access to important information regarding ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Emotional Behavioral Disorders, in order to achieve the goal of greater access for people with special needs.

"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn."

"Foster an inclusive classroom where students can thrive."

"Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or in the same way."

"Fair doesn't mean giving every child the same thing, it means giving every child what they need."
